A day in the life of an Accountant
Beth Ramsden
Senior Manager
My role at Peppercorn Tax involves working with our clients to provide accounting services, as well as supporting my accounting and tax colleagues. We have clients in a wide range of sectors, who each have differing needs. I have the opportunity to build relationships with our clients and understand how they operate and what their goals are. It’s really rewarding to see a client successfully achieve their objectives as a result of the advice and support we’ve been able to provide.
A typical day at Peppercorn Tax will always involve lots of variety, whether it’s preparing accounts for a client in the farming industry, working with a colleague to answer a complex VAT question or helping a client in the motor industry to sell their business. There’s always lots of opportunities to develop skills and knowledge. I’m very happy to be part of a great team of supportive and knowledgeable colleagues and there are lots of opportunities to use our shared knowledge to help our clients succeed.
Achieving the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification was an important milestone in my career as an accountant. It’s a respected qualification worldwide, which gives employers and clients assurance of my capabilities.
Qualifying as an accountant with the ACCA gave me experience of many different facets of the accountancy profession and helped me to develop knowledge and skills which have greatly benefitted me in the workplace. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to support our accounts team as they work towards this qualification and take an important step along their own career paths.
A day in the life of a Tax Adviser
Elisabeth Maw
Tax Senior
My job is split into two parts; tax compliance and tax advisory. A typical day for me involves preparing tax returns for individuals and trusts, communicating with clients and liaising with HMRC. Communicating with clients can involve responding to queries by email and phone and also meeting clients in person.
I also assist the directors with tax planning projects, helping clients to structure their tax affairs in a tax efficient way. This involves a lot of problem solving by researching tax legislation and case law, and applying it to a problem to find a solution. This part of the job also involves working with other advisers such as solicitors to put plans into action. No two days are the same! Tax legislation is constantly changing, so I am always learning something new!
I qualified with the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) in 2020 and I have spent much of 2021 and 2022 studying to qualify as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).
This is the ‘gold star’ tax qualification and is highly regarded in the profession. Studying for the CTA has helped me become a better tax adviser at work because it requires you to solve complex tax issues and provide written answers to questions – tax is more than just numbers!
